Iri sat silently fuming as her sister berated her mercilessly. When she had finally woken up that morning, she had spent an hour and a half pacing through the garden trying to decide how to hide her injuries from her sister. She decided on just sneaking in to bed and hoping Salem didn't notice. That plan didn't work, of course, because Salem was waiting when Iri snuck in, armed with a fury Iri had rarely seen directed at her. Her sister had been shouting at her for almost fifteen minutes, and it was wearing thin.

Rain beat down, wrapping the City in a frigid mist. The labyrinthine streets became nearly impossible to navigate, congested as they were. Thunderclaps rumbled through the ground and the buildings stood in sharp relief with each stab of lightning. Salem watched the storm rage on through the bedroom window, the rain dripping reflected shadows across her face. The room behind her was dark but for glow of the dragons-blood incense she was burning, and her bed was piled with warm blankets. Her sister's bed, however, was neatly made and very much empty.
